9/9/22 Whitmore Lake at Inter-city Baptist
20 – 25, 14 – 25, 6 – 15
On Friday, Whitmore Lake traveled to Inter-city Baptist to open their volleyball season. In the first set the two teams played pretty even at first, and were tied at five, but then Inter-city got on a roll. A few rotations later, Whitmore Lake found themselves in a big hole, down 7 – 18. The Trojans weren’t about to quit and mounted their comeback behind the strong serving of Aliyah Baker, Hailey Valentine and Mila Proimos. Before long, Whitmore Lake was right back in the fight, only down four at 18 – 22. The Trojans added a couple of more, before Inter-city was able to close out the set at 25 – 20. In the second set, Whitmore Lake was playing better, and had many good volleys with Inter-city, but at the end of those volleys, the ball always seemed to stop on Whitmore’s side. Josey Marcum’s serving kept the Trojans in the set early, and Phoenix Wilson tried to mount another comeback with her serving, but it wasn’t to be and the Chargers ended the second set, 25 – 14. In the third set, Whitmore Lake struggled to score off their own serve, with side outs accounting for five of their six points and Inter-city claimed the final set 15 – 6 to sweep the Trojans on the night. Although the scores don’t really show it, Whitmore Lake played well for their first outing with many positives, including some three hit attacks, good hustle and some great saves. The match was also a great learning experience, figuring out some things they still need to work on while also getting out those first match jitters. The team’s record is 0 – 1 (0 – 1 MIAC) and it won’t be long for the Trojans to try to improve that as they play again tonight at Greenhills.
