9/12/22 Whitmore Lake at Greenhills

8th Grade

25 – 19, 25 – 18, 8 – 15

Last night, Whitmore Lake played at Greenhills for the second of three matches in a row.  Greenhills won the warm-up, but when the match began, it was a different story.  After the first few serves in the first set, it looked like the Trojans were going to be in trouble, but then Mila Proimos served three points in a row to put Whitmore Lake within one at 8 – 9.  The teams fought back and forth for a while and finally Aliyah Baker put the Trojans on top, 16 – 15.  From there, Whitmore Lake stayed on top by one or two until Sophia Chemotti served three in a row to wrap up the first set 25 – 19.  In the second set, Whitmore Lake got down early allowing a Gryphon server to put up five in a row for a 7 – 1 lead.  A time out settled the Trojans down and Izzy Bishop served Whitmore Lake back within two to make it a match again.  Next Marilyne Dongmo stepped into the kitchen and served up five in a row including several aces to take a 16 – 13 Trojan lead.  From there, Whitmore Lake never looked back and serves from Phoenix Wilson and Baker took the Trojans to set point, on top 24 – 17 before Greehills was able to get one last desperation stop.  All the Trojans needed was a side out for the set and match win.  Greenhills helped Whitmore Lake out with a missed serve handing the Trojans the match at 25 – 18. With the match in hand, during the final set, Whitmore Lake mixed some things up to gain valuable experience for the future, although the changes gave Greenhills an advantage in the present and captured the third set 15 – 8.  During the final set, several girls tried overhand serving for the first time in a match and Lindsay Culp gave setting a try.  For the night Whitmore Lake played great and took a huge step forward from Friday.  Baker led the team with many great passes to the setters of Proimos and Wilson who did a great job of setting up the hitters for many three hit attacks.  Bailey Hill played good defense at the net intimidating the Gryphon girls and Josie Marcum had a solid night of passing, while Hailey Valentine showed she is a force to reckon with from the serving line during the third set.  Whitmore Lake evened their record to 1 – 1 (0 – 1 MIAC) and are back at it again tonight in league action when they go to Southfield Christian for their third road trip in as many days.
