MS volleyball travels to Novi Christian

9/10/24 Whitmore Lake at Novi Christian

Black Team

25 – 15, 25 – 8, 11 – 15

Last night, Whitmore Lake traveled to Novi Christian for their second match of the season.  Hailey Bowers served the team to a 5 – 0 lead, but as the Trojans were trying to run their offense, many unforced errors helped Novi Christian keep the set close.  After one full rotation, Whitmore Lake was only up two at 12 – 10.  Finally, after Grace Bennardi made her second trip to the serving line, the Trojans started to put the hammer down as Bennardi served six in row for a 22 – 12 lead.  On the next rotation, Channing Cook served out the set for a 25 – 15 win.  In the second set, Whitmore Lake continued their strong play and Bowers started the set off with her signature five points.  Isla Sterzik added three and the Trojans were rolling, not giving up a point off the Warrior serve. After Cook finished serving Whitmore Lake was in full control with a 15 – 4 lead.  On Bowers second turn at the service line, Whitmore Lake ended the set with a commanding 25 – 8 beat down.  With the match in hand, it was time for Trojan girls to get some experience in different positions during the third set.  With the girls out of their comfort zone, Novi Christian was able to make the set competitive and after the first full rotation, the set tied at nine.  On the next serve, Ani Zimmer put the Trojans on top by one, but after that, Novi Christian went on a scoring run, stealing the third set from Whitmore Lake, 15 – 11.  During the match, Whitmore Lake made improvements on setting up their offense over last week, but had trouble getting the hit portion down.  Their serve receive was spot on though, easily handing most of the Warrior serves.  In her first action of the season, Brooklyn Blumensteil, had a good defensive outing with several difficult saves.  Bowers also showed her defensive prowess, while she and Zimmer had solid nights from the serving line.  The win evens the Trojan record to 1 – 1 (1 – 1 MIAC).  Whitmore Lake will play their first home match the season on Friday against Inter-City Baptist.

Red/White teams

Whitmore’s hard work practicing serving payed off this Tuesday during their joint match against Novi Christian. The Red and White teams played the match together, with the Red team decisively winning the first set and the White team winning a slightly closer second set.

In the first set, Olivia H. started off strong with a series of unreturned serves. Emma Leonard and Adelaide also had a strong first set at the serving line. Claire Birely subbed in and led strong at the net. Isobel S. worked hard to move to the ball when Novi had the serve. In the end, Olivia ended the set with serve after excellent serve. WL won the first set 25-10.

In the second set, the White team secured victory for WL. When the ball was returned, the White team worked hard to attack the ball. In line with their first match, Sarah had a strong night at the serving line, as did Mackenzie Lademan. The girls also stayed positive and kept with the flow of the game even with multiple sub-ins. WL won the second set 25-15.

Even after securing the win, both teams worked together to get a 3-0 for the match. Red team covered the first 15 points of the match, with Annie Hunt serving the majority of the won points. Then, the White team subbed in to secure the final 10 points of the match. Novi fought hard to get the game 19-23, but WL got the serve back and Lillian Wilcox served a beautiful final point of the game.

This leaves the Red Team undefeated this season (2-0 MIAC) and has the White Team earning their first victory of the year 1-1 (1-1 MIAC).

Middle School Volleyball opens the season @ Parkway

9/5/24 Whitmore Lake at Parkway Christian

Black Team

16 – 25, 25 – 15, 14 – 16

Last night, Whitmore Lake’s middle school volleyball teams opened their 2024 campaign with a long trip to Parkway Christian.  With minimal practice, Whitmore Lake was a little nervous in the first set, and Parkway Christian’s #1 server put the hurt on the Trojans, dropping in the first eight points of the match.  Emma Mullins slowly adjusted the hard pinpoint serving and helped the Trojans get the side out.  Hailey

Bowers was the first Trojan server and nearly matched the Eagles output, scoring seven on her serve.  Now Whitmore Lake was back in the fight and on the next rotation, the Trojans took the lead at 10 – 9.  For the next few rotations, the score stayed tight, but then that tough server got another turn and finished off the first set 25 – 16.  Now Whitmore Lake was ready to show them who the real Trojans were.  Bowers started off the second set with eight consecutive points from the service line.  Whitmore Lake started to move a lot better and started setting and hitting the ball.  Whitmore Lake remained ahead about eight points for most of the set and in the end, Ani Zimmer served the final two points for a 25 – 15 win and tied the match at one set apiece.  The 15 point third set would determine the winner.  Whitmore Lake won the coin toss and put the first three points on the scoreboard.  Parkway Christian scored the next four.  After Grace Bennardi’s serve, Whitmore Lake was on top, 8 – 5, but the Eagles tied it at eight on their next serve.  From there, it was one point at a time and the score was still tied at 12.  On Whitmore Lake’s next serve, Maggie Muchow served the Trojans to game point at 14 – 12, but Whitmore Lake couldn’t quite finish it out on that rotation.  Parkway Christian still had life and took full advantage of the opportunity.  The eagles served out the final set for 16 – 14 win, to claim the hard fought match.  Along the way, Whitmore Lake played very well, including some spectacular quick reaction saves and good teamwork.  Bennardi, Mullins and Isla Sterzik all had some nice hits at the next, but the highlight of the evening was the “Block heard around the world.”  The Eagles had a good hitter in the front row, but Whitmore Lake had the Monster in the Middle.  The Parkway Christian girl went up for a hard hit, but Bennardi went up with her and put up the wall.  All you could hear was the crack of the ball bouncing off Bennardi’s hands with a spectacular block sending the ball right back to the Eagles.  Even the Parkway Christian hitter was impressed, congratulating Bennardi after the point.  With a loss in the season opener, Whitmore Lake’s record stands at 0 – 1 (0 – 1 MIAC).  The girls will be on the road again next Tuesday when they travel to Novi Christian.

Red Team

25 – 20, 19 – 25, 15 – 13

Last night, Whitmore Lake’s Red team opened their season with a victory over Parkway Christian.  The Trojans took the first set 25 – 20, then the Eagles nearly mirrored the second set winning 25 – 19.  The red team would need to win the final set to take the match and the girls didn’t disappoint, fighting hard in a tight third set.  The Trojans sealed the victory with a 15 – 13 third set win.  Claire Birely and Emma had outstanding nights at the serving line.  Adelaide Kettman and Cecelia Abla played well in the front row, setting many balls back to the other side of the net.  Whitmore Lake starts the season with a 1 – 0 (1 – 0 MIAC) record.

White Team

16 – 25, 9 – 25, 15 – 7

Whitmore Lake’s White team’s inexperience showed in their opening match of the season.  Parkway Christian won the first two sets fairly easily, but by the third set, Whitmore Lake was starting to get their feet under them.  With some better serving and passing Whitmore Lake took the final set 15 – 7.  Sarah Brown and Lilly Wilcox, aka Willy, were scrambling all over the court to get the ball.  Brown had a good night from the serving line for the Trojans.  Emmy Theil and Lily Balog, aka Billy, were passing the ball very well.  The White team’s record is 0 – 1 (0 – 1 MIAC).
