MHSAA Summer Update Coming by May 29

Updated on 06/10/2022

Dear MHSAA Community,

The MHSAA hopes this email finds you and your family healthy and safe.

Next week, the MHSAA will be providing a comprehensive update that will include further guidance from state government and health department officials, along with the document “MHSAA Guidance for Opening School Sports” that will assist schools with procedures and protocols as we transition into summer activity when permitted by Governor Whitmer.  This guidance document has been a collaborative effort between the MHSAA, National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) and the MHSAA and NFHS Sports Medicine Advisory committees which both include physicians, other medical professionals and school administrators.  We hope more definite details will be available next week with the current state of emergency order set to expire on May 28 which may or may not be extended.  The one thing we have learned over the past nine weeks is this continues to be a fluid situation, and we simply wanted to alert you that further details and the guidance document will be coming to you by May 29.

We wish you and your family a safe Memorial Day weekend.  The MHSAA will be connecting with you again next week.

Thank you.

MHSAA cancels all 2019-20 winter and spring tournaments and sport seasons

Updated on 06/10/2022

Dear MHSAA Family:

Below you will find the media release announcing the MHSAA’s decision to cancel all 2019-20 winter and spring tournaments and sport seasons.  This was based on protecting the health, safety and well-being of students, teachers, coaches, support staff, officials, media members, parents, fans and families.  It follows the Governor’s order of April 2 and will allow member schools to put all attention, energy and resources into online learning experiences for the next two months.  This is a public health crisis and the MHSAA, like many others, is putting public health first.

We wanted to alert you to this news before the public announcement.  Thank you for all that you do for school sports in our state.

MHSAA Cancels Remainder of 2019-20 Winter & Spring Seasons

EAST LANSING, Mich. – April 3 – The Michigan High School Athletic Association has canceled the remainder of the 2019-20 Winter and Spring sports seasons, in compliance with the Thursday (April 2) “state of disaster” directive by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer closing school buildings and moving education online for the remainder of the school year to help decrease the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus.

This will be the first school year to not see MHSAA Finals played in multiple sports since 1942-43, when World War II led to the elimination of Finals in most sports.

The MHSAA on March 12 suspended its girls and boys basketball, girls gymnastics, boys ice hockey and boys swimming & diving tournaments amid COVID-19 concerns. All activity in all sports was halted March 13. Spring sports to that point had begun practice, but not competition.

The MHSAA’s Representative Council approved during its Winter Meeting on March 27 a series of concepts for completing the Winter tournaments and an abbreviated Spring season, contingent on the lifting of a statewide quarantine. The closure of school buildings into June made those possibilities void.

The MHSAA’s Executive Committee, comprised of officers of the larger Council, affirmed the decision today (April 3) to cancel the remainder of this school year’s activities.

“We are heartbroken to not be able to provide these opportunities for Michigan’s student-athletes, and especially seniors. We continue to hear from dozens asking us to hold out hope. But safety always must come first, and Governor Whitmer is making courageous decisions to safeguard the people of our state,” MHSAA Executive Director Mark Uyl said. “We understand as much as anyone how much school sports mean to athletes and their communities. We had ideas and hopes for finishing Winter and Spring and helping bring some sort of normalcy after this long break. But this is the correct decision, and we will play our part in bringing schools and communities together again when the time is right.”

“For now, we cannot state strongly enough that all students, staffs and others follow the guidelines established to slow the spread of this virus – we all must do our part.”

Because the five Winter sports were not able to conclude with Finals, no champions will be awarded in those sports for 2019-20. However, championships won at earlier rounds of those tournaments (District or Regional) will continue to stand.

The MHSAA will in coming weeks provide guidelines and other information pertinent to this unusual offseason as attention is turned to preparing for Fall 2020.

Small stature, big talent: Whitmore Lake’s standout freshman guard is only getting started

WHITMORE LAKE – Kristina Peach won’t wow you with her stature but her play has already started to turn heads.

What the Whitmore Lake freshman guard lacks in height, she makes up for with her talent and it was evident from the day she became a Trojan.

Peach transferred from the Jackson area to Whitmore Lake last year and first joined the volleyball team before bursting on the scene as one of the best girls basketball underclassmen in the Ann Arbor area.

Whitmore Lake coach and Athletic Director Brad McCormack knew from the first time he watched Peach compete athletically that he had a unique talent on his hands.

“I obviously noticed that she was a pretty dominant little athlete,” McCormack said. “Once basketball season started, it became very apparent that she was a gifted little player.

“You don’t have to be a big player to be an impact player. She just has the will to win. She’s got that ‘IT’ factor. She does what it takes. She’s a very gifted ball handler, very gifted shooter, very coachable and certainly is open to adapting to how she wants to play.”

Immediate impact

Being new to the area meant opposing teams had no idea what they were in for, and Peach, a 5-foot-6 guard, did more than take advantage.

In her first high school season, the freshman standout after averaged 19.5 points, 6.9 steals and 6.1 rebounds per game and was named Michigan Independent Athletic Conference Player of the Year, second team Dream Team in Ann Arbor and was honorable mention Division 3 All-State.

“She’s gotten a ton of notoriety this year and deservedly so,” McCormack said. “I’m happy that she came to our school. I think small schools can get bad wraps like if you come to a small school, you can’t get recognized, but I think Kristina has somewhat debunked that thought.

“Because our school is smaller, she was able to have a far bigger impact than she would have at a larger school. Good student, great kid, great athlete makes her a lot of run to be around.”

Not only did Peach’s skill aid in her success, her confidence didn’t lack either.

“I can compete with anybody,” Peach said. “It doesn’t matter who it is, I can beat them because of my mentality. I love to win and hate to lose.

“This has really been a really good high school experience for me being my freshman year. I just loved it. I love my coaches and my teammates.”

That mentality, along with a team determined to change the program’s fortunes, helped the Trojans produce one of the best seasons in school history.

Whitmore Lake finished the season 19-3 overall and 12-0 in the MIAC, the program’s first league title since 1979. The Trojans’ 19 victories this year were as many as the team had combined from the start of the 2009-2010 season through the 2018-2019 campaign and was the second most wins in a season since 1977.

Peach wasn’t the only reason the Trojans had such a large turnaround, but her impact certainly helped.

“When you have one player that is that talented, it makes a big difference,” McCormack said. “It's a team game and she understands that it takes five players to win games.”

For Peach, her individual success was a testament to the help she received from her team.

“It means a lot because I work really hard,” Peach said. “I just love the game of basketball and the ability to be better.

“My team really helped me. I feel like I made a big impact being a leader on the court. I wanted to make my team better. I just wanted to make people better on the court and help win games.”

More to prove

The goal for Peach is to play basketball at the collegiate level and McCormack believes anything is possible for the freshman sensation.

“In my opinion, the sky’s the limit for a kid like Kristina,” McCormack said. “She’s very hungry to be good. She’s a very humble kid. Some kids, when they burst on the scene, they can get pretty arrogant about things, and I certainly don’t get that impression from her.

“As long as she continues to work hard and be coachable and prepare, she’s going to be a very talented player.”

MHSAA Suspends Winter Tournaments Amid COVID-19 Concerns

EAST LANSING, Mich. – March 12 – Postseason events sponsored by the Michigan High School Athletic Association have been suspended immediately and indefinitely due to concerns related to COVID-19.

The Ice Hockey, Girls Gymnastics and Lower Peninsula Boys Swimming & Diving Finals had been scheduled for this weekend, while the Girls & Boys Basketball Tournaments are midway through earlier rounds of their playoff progressions.

On Wednesday, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer recommended a stoppage of large gatherings in order to assist in preventing the spread of COVID-19.

“Based on the events of the last 48 hours and with things changing by the minute, we believe we have no choice but to suspend our winter tournaments immediately,” MHSAA Executive Director Mark Uyl said. “This is a suspension until we have a better handle on the situation. The health and welfare of everyone involved is our number one priority.”

Uyl added that more information and updates will be forthcoming over the next few days. No timetable has been determined for possible rescheduling for tournaments.

Boys and girls varsity basketball get road wins

Updated on 06/10/2022

Both varsity basketball teams came out with road wins on Friday night at Livingston Christian.  T boys had a balanced scoring attack with 10 players recording points.  Freshman Isaac Brady led the way with 17, followed by Brendan Ely with 16, Cole Henning with 13 and 10 from Zach Brady and Gareth Romine.  The Trojans hit the road on Tuesday for a conference matchup vs. Lutheran Westland.

The varsity girls earn a tough win vs a very good Livingston Christian (8-2) team 51-46.  After leading by as many as 13 late in the second half, LCS went on a run to take a 2 point lead with just under 3 minutes left in the game.  In the next offensive possession, Abbie Kurtz hit a big 3 to put the girls back up by 1.  After retaking the lead, the lady Trojans never looked back.  Leading stats for the game:

Brooke Craven - 12 points and 13 rebounds

Kristina Peach - 13 points and 14 steals and 6 assists

Eveliina Taylor - 7 points and 2 steals

Catherine Romine - 6 points and 6 steals.

*Not in the stat book - Adriana Canter was outstanding off the bench

Next up, the girls host Lutheran Westland on Tuesday and Clarenceville on Friday.
