8th grade volleyball on the road vs. Roeper

Posted on 09/28/2022

9/27/22 Whitmore Lake At Roeper

8th Grade

15 – 25, 25 – 21, 8 – 15

Last night, Whitmore Lake got on the bus for a trip to Roeper.  In the first set, Whitmore Lake had trouble getting in rhythm and was lacking a little energy on the court, but was able to hang in the set, only down 10 – 14 after one complete rotation.  From there though, Whitmore Lake got stuck in a rotation and a hard hitting, top spin jump serve plagued the Trojan server receive and the Rough Riders rattled off eight straight points for a 22 – 12 lead.  Whitmore Lake finally got out of that rotation, but after two more Trojan serves Roeper finished the set with a 25 – 15 win.  In the second set, the Trojan energy returned and Whitmore Lake jumped out to a quick five point lead off the Aliyah Baker serve.  After Marilynne Dongmo finished her serve, the Trojans were on top 12 – 5.  Whitmore Lake stumbled a little and Roeper made a comeback tying the match at 19.  It was Dongmo’s serve again and she took Whitmore Lake to the penultimate point before the Rough Riders got a crucial side out for another chance.  Roeper didn’t capitalize on the opportunity, giving the ball back to Whitmore Lake for another try to close out the set, only needing one more point.  The Trojans couldn’t get it done, giving Roeper one last chance, but their ensuing serve was short and Whitmore Lake evened the match winning the second set 25 – 21.  In the third set, serving turned out to be the difference, with the Trojans missing a lot of serves, while the Rough Rider serve remained solid and Roeper finished the evening with a 15 – 8 set and match win.  Mila Proimos continues to be amazing with her tips and hits in the front row, while Hailey Valentine did a great job with her front row passing, not letting the short balls in the middle drop.  Whitmore Lake is also showing improvement with their fearlessness on serve receive, not being afraid to stand in there, taking on the opposition’s hard serves and Izzy Bishop showed her toughness as she continues her role as the ball magnet taking another ball to the head, but not being phased by it.  The Trojan record now stands at 2 – 5 (0 – 5 MIAC).  The girls will get a break from matches for the remainder of the week, but will be busy during the next two weeks with six matches over that span and four of them at home.

8th grade volleyball gets a win vs. St. Pats

9/22/22 Whitmore Lake vs. St. Pat’s

8th Grade

23 – 25, 25 – 13, 25 – 18

Last night, Whitmore Lake hosted St. Pat’s out of Brighton trying to get back into the win column.  In the first set, the score went back and forth for a while, then St. Pat’s was able to stay on top by a couple before pulling out in front with a 13 – 8 lead.  Not to worry though because Sophia Chemotti served the Trojans back within one at 12 – 13.  St. Pat’s opened up the gap again, but off the Josie Marcum serve Whitmore Lake was finally able to get back on top at 20 – 19.  After two more rotations, it looked like Whitmore Lake was going to be able to finish the set off, but their serve failed and the ball went back into the hands of the Shamrocks.  Whitmore Lake got one more stop at set point, but again the Trojan serve failed and the visitors claimed the first set, 25 – 23.  To take the second set, Whitmore Lake would need to improve their serving and the girls set out to do that.  The second set opened with a bang of a super long volley with both teams making incredible saves, but in the end the Trojans came out victorious for the point, foreshadowing things to come.  After two rotations, Phynni Lou had the Trojans on top 5 – 1, then after a side out, Marilyne Dongmo added three more and the Trojans were rolling at 9 – 2.  Next it was Mila Proimos’ turn to add three in row for Whitmore Lake to lead 14 – 5.  Whitmore Lake continued to string points together when Aliyah Baker finally got her serve going for four in a row doubling up the Shamrock’s points at 20 – 10.  Dongmo served out the set for a 25 – 13 win making the match even at one set apiece.  The match would come down to the deciding third set.  The teams fought back and forth with great volleys but the Trojans more times than not came out on top, holding an early 10 – 5 lead.  St. Pat’s closed the gap to two, but after the Izzy Bishop and Proimos serves, the Trojans pulled away again at 16 – 9.  From there the Trojan serve started to falter again, but an outstanding defensive effort kept Whitmore Lake alive and their offense started to fire up with some great hits and tips at the net.  After a few more rotations, Whitmore Lake finished the set at 25 – 18 taking two out of three to win the match.   After Whitmore Lake got their serve going, they played really well and showed a big improvement over Tuesday.  The girls were communicating much better and did a great job of passing the ball to the setters and who set the ball up for Trojan attacks.  Whitmore Lake played with a libero for the first time this year with Baker returning to her position from last year making numerous perfect passes to the setters and had two excellent back row hits.  Proimos, one of the shortest girls on the team, is really improving her play at the net and had several good tips leading to Trojan points.  Lindsay Culp also had some tips and Bailey Hill had several saves to keep those long volleys going.  Hailey Valentine had a solid night playing in the front row and pinch serving when Baker was required to rotate out, while Phynni Lou is really beginning to take control of the offense making great sets to the Trojan hitters.  The win improves Whitmore Lake’s record to 2 – 3 (0 – 2 MIAC.  The Trojans will be back on the court on Monday playing at the LCA gym against league foe Plymouth Christian.

8th grade volleyball hosts Greenhills

9/20/22 Whitmore Lake vs. Greenhills

8th Grade

17 – 25, 10 – 25, 10 – 15

Last night, Whitmore Lake played their home opener against Greenhills.  After defeating the Gryphons a week ago, the Trojans were confident they would put another notch in the win column.  Greenhills had a different idea though.  In the first set, Greenhills jumped out to a quick 7 – 0 lead before Whitmore Lake could get a side out.  From there, Greenhills would score two points for every one of the Trojans and creeped closer to the 25 point finish line.  Finally with the score at 20 – 12, Izzy Bishop served up three in a row to close the gap and give Whitmore Lake some hope, but Greenhills quickly snuffed that out and won the first set 25 – 17.  Whitmore Lake knew they could take these girls, and were ready to make it a three set match.  This time, the Trojans were scoring two points for every one of the Gryphons and were up 9 – 5 looking like they were going to cruise to an easy win.  Greenhills tightened the set up to 8 – 9 and Whitmore scored another point off a side out before the wheels fell off the Trojan bus.  Greenhills scored the next point on a side out and then served 16 in a row stomping the life out of the Trojans on their way to a 25 – 10 second set win.  Whitmore Lake tried to regroup for the third set, but couldn’t put those wheels back on the bus and Greehills sent Whitmore Lake back to the garage for repairs, winning the third set 15 – 10.  Whitmore Lake tried hard, but just couldn’t get in sync and lacked communication on the court, letting many easy balls drop to the floor.  When Whitmore Lake was able to set up the ball, they did a better job of trying to hit the ball for an attack rather than just bumping the ball over the net.  The girls will shine that bus up in practice and be ready to go on Thursday for another home match against St. Pat’s.  With the loss, the Trojan record now stands at 1 – 3 (0 – 2 MIAC).

9/13/22 Whitmore Lake at Southfield Christian

8th Grade

13 – 25, 25 – 27, 11 – 15

Last night, at Southfield Christian, Whitmore Lake took to the court for their third match of the season.  In the first set, you could tell that playing three matches in a row without any practices in between was taking its toll on the Trojans and there wasn’t any energy on the Trojan side of the court.  Aliyah Baker and Sophia Chemotti were able to put together two runs of three during their service rotation, but outside of that there wasn’t much going on for the Trojans and Southfield Christian easily won the first set 25 – 13.  The second set started off better and after giving up the first three points Whitmore Lake took the next four.  Next up was the Eagles ace server at the line, who rattled off eight points before Whitmore Lake could get a stop.  It didn’t matter though, as Whitmore Lake, off the Baker serve, stormed right back to tie the set at 11.  The Eagles took a two point lead and held on to that until the set was at 24 – 21 when Whitmore got the crucial side out to keep the match alive.  Chemotti was next up at the serving line and turned into a diamond under the pressure.  She served two points to bring the set to 23 – 24.  Southfield Christian took a time out to try ice Chemotti, but she would have none of it.  She served another two points to take a 25 – 24 lead and just like the Trojans planned during the timeout she made a perfect serve on game point, but after a good rally with the Eagles, the ball landed on the Trojan side of the net, giving Southfield Christian the side out to tie the set at 25.  The eagles served up an ace to take them to game point and on the ensuing serve the Trojan pass hit the low ceiling and dropped to the floor giving the Eagles a hard fought win at 27 – 25.  In the final set Whitmore Lake was fired up and pouring on the points early for a 9 – 5 lead, but then the Southfield Christian ace server was up again and added her own wave of points for a 10 – 9 lead.  Whitmore Lake got one more shot with Mila Proimos making a couple of nice serves before dropping the set 11 – 15.  Once Whitmore Lake woke up, they played well and did an excellent job not letting the many tips by the Eagles hit the floor.  When the volleys were turning into a net game, Phoenix Wilson played smart and would push the ball deep realizing the Eagles had the height advantage at the net, and Baker continues to have great communication and passing on the court.  Chemotti is becoming more comfortable on the court and making big contributions to the team while Josie Marcum continues to improve with each match after missing nearly a week of practice from an illness.  The girls will finally get a chance for some practice and have a few days off from matches with their next match on Tuesday, September 20.  After the tough loss, the Trojan record falls to 1 – 2 (0 – 2 MIAC).

8th grade volleyball gets road win at Greenhills

9/12/22 Whitmore Lake at Greenhills

8th Grade

25 – 19, 25 – 18, 8 – 15

Last night, Whitmore Lake played at Greenhills for the second of three matches in a row.  Greenhills won the warm-up, but when the match began, it was a different story.  After the first few serves in the first set, it looked like the Trojans were going to be in trouble, but then Mila Proimos served three points in a row to put Whitmore Lake within one at 8 – 9.  The teams fought back and forth for a while and finally Aliyah Baker put the Trojans on top, 16 – 15.  From there, Whitmore Lake stayed on top by one or two until Sophia Chemotti served three in a row to wrap up the first set 25 – 19.  In the second set, Whitmore Lake got down early allowing a Gryphon server to put up five in a row for a 7 – 1 lead.  A time out settled the Trojans down and Izzy Bishop served Whitmore Lake back within two to make it a match again.  Next Marilyne Dongmo stepped into the kitchen and served up five in a row including several aces to take a 16 – 13 Trojan lead.  From there, Whitmore Lake never looked back and serves from Phoenix Wilson and Baker took the Trojans to set point, on top 24 – 17 before Greehills was able to get one last desperation stop.  All the Trojans needed was a side out for the set and match win.  Greenhills helped Whitmore Lake out with a missed serve handing the Trojans the match at 25 – 18. With the match in hand, during the final set, Whitmore Lake mixed some things up to gain valuable experience for the future, although the changes gave Greenhills an advantage in the present and captured the third set 15 – 8.  During the final set, several girls tried overhand serving for the first time in a match and Lindsay Culp gave setting a try.  For the night Whitmore Lake played great and took a huge step forward from Friday.  Baker led the team with many great passes to the setters of Proimos and Wilson who did a great job of setting up the hitters for many three hit attacks.  Bailey Hill played good defense at the net intimidating the Gryphon girls and Josie Marcum had a solid night of passing, while Hailey Valentine showed she is a force to reckon with from the serving line during the third set.  Whitmore Lake evened their record to 1 – 1 (0 – 1 MIAC) and are back at it again tonight in league action when they go to Southfield Christian for their third road trip in as many days.

9/9/22 Whitmore Lake at Inter-city Baptist

8th Grade

20 – 25, 14 – 25, 6 – 15

On Friday, Whitmore Lake traveled to Inter-city Baptist to open their volleyball season.  In the first set the two teams played pretty even at first, and were tied at five, but then Inter-city got on a roll.  A few rotations later, Whitmore Lake found themselves in a big hole, down 7 – 18.  The Trojans weren’t about to quit and mounted their comeback behind the strong serving of Aliyah Baker, Hailey Valentine and Mila Proimos.  Before long, Whitmore Lake was right back in the fight, only down four at 18 – 22.  The Trojans added a couple of more, before Inter-city was able to close out the set at 25 – 20.  In the second set, Whitmore Lake was playing better, and had many good volleys with Inter-city, but at the end of those volleys, the ball always seemed to stop on Whitmore’s side.  Josey Marcum’s serving kept the Trojans in the set early, and Phoenix Wilson tried to mount another comeback with her serving, but it wasn’t to be and the Chargers ended the second set, 25 – 14.  In the third set, Whitmore Lake struggled to score off their own serve, with side outs accounting for five of their six points and Inter-city claimed the final set 15 – 6 to sweep the Trojans on the night.  Although the scores don’t really show it, Whitmore Lake played well for their first outing with many positives, including some three hit attacks, good hustle and some great saves.  The match was also a great learning experience, figuring out some things they still need to work on while also getting out those first match jitters.  The team’s record is 0 – 1 (0 – 1 MIAC) and it won’t be long for the Trojans to try to improve that as they play again tonight at Greenhills.
