MHSAA Update - June 17th

Updated on 06/10/2022

Dear MHSAA Community,

Over the past 14 months, you have received dozens of emails and communication from the MHSAA as we have navigated the challenges of sports and COVID together. It appears we are at the doorstep of normalcy for school sports.

Effective on Tuesday, June 22, there are no longer any MDHHS COVID requirements or restrictions on testing, gatherings, groups, and face masks for any sports activity, both indoors and outdoors. The most significant change in today’s announcement from the Governor is indoor face masks are no longer required for anyone, including both vaccinated and non-vaccinated individuals, effective on June 22.

This has been the most challenging and unique athletic school year in the nearly 100-year history of the MHSAA, and we wish to thank you for your support, help, and efforts as we were able to provide three seasons that all reached the finish line for our kids, coaches, and school communities together. This weekend, we are concluding our final three MHSAA Finals in baseball, softball, and soccer as this difficult yet rewarding year comes to a close.

Have an enjoyable and safe summer. We look forward to a much more normal August and beyond in 21-22.

Thanks again for your support of the MHSAA.

Mark Uyl
MHSAA Executive Director

MHSAA spring update - MDHHS order

Updated on 06/10/2022

Below, is the most recent update from the MHSAA:

Dear MHSAA Community,

We are sharing the following updated guidance based on the latest MDHHS Epidemic Order issued on May 14, effective at 9 am on Saturday, May 15:

  • Face masks are no longer required for any outdoor activity, including the outdoor contact spring sports of soccer and lacrosse.  While individuals may opt to wear a face mask, there is no longer a requirement that face masks be worn outdoors by any player, coach, team personnel, official, or spectators.
  • For fully vaccinated individuals, face masks are no longer required during indoor activity.  MDHHS is defining “fully vaccinated” as 14 days after the second dose of Pfizer or Moderna or 14 days after the single dose of Johnson & Johnson.  For all individuals not fully vaccinated, all indoor activity continues to require a face mask.  From the May 15 order, the indoor face mask requirement for non-vaccinated individuals is set to expire on July 1.
  • There is no change in the May 15 order to the weekly testing requirement.  Weekly testing of non-fully vaccinated spring sport student-athletes must continue through the expiration of the order on May 31.
  • There is no change to the outdoor spectator limits from previous orders (1,000 spectators in many cases) other than the fact that face masks are no longer required for anyone outdoors, spectators included.

We will continue to communicate with all schools as updated and ongoing MDHHS guidance and orders continue to be issued.

Thank you.

Spring sports update - covid rapid testing

Updated on 06/10/2022

Dear Parents,

This information is for families with spring sports participants.

On the cusp of the beginning of spring sports, the MDHHS issued an order which implements a testing protocol for athletes ages 13-19. The MDHHS then gave further guidance on the testing (Interim Guidance for Athletics). The MHSAA then followed up with clarification to the guidelines to participate on March 24. Whitmore Lake values athletics and will provide students with athletic opportunities within the parameters dictated by the MDHHS.

  • Negative tests: Athletes that test negative can continue with practice or competition.

  • Positive tests: Anyone that tests positive will be sent home immediately to self-isolate. If an athlete can produce a negative PCR test within 48 hours of the positive antigen test and remains symptom-free, they can return to play.

  • Exemptions: Athletes who can produce documentation from their doctor of a positive COVID-19 result are exempt from testing up to 90 days from the day of the test. If they remain symptom-free they may participate in athletics without testing. Please note that positive antibody test results do not constitute an exemption from testing.

  • Missed Test: If a student misses a test due to absence, they will need to complete a test upon returning to school prior to going to class or resuming athletic practice/competition.

  • Parental Consent: If you do wish to participate in spring sports in accordance with the new protocol, please sign and return the following forms: Registration and Consent FormCode of Conduct. These forms will remain on file with the school. (Students 18 years and older may sign their own forms.) The parental consent must be on file with the school on or before April 13 for the student to participate in testing and maintain eligibility.

  • Students will have to arrive with the Testing Collection Form completed.

  • Click Here To review the Binax NOW COVID-19 Antigen Test.

  • There will not be a cost to families for the tests.

Even with testing, mask requirements remain in place for spring. They are as follows:

  • Face Masks – Face masks must be worn based on the following guidelines for outdoor activity (practice and competition):

  • Non-Contact Sports – Baseball, Golf, Softball, Tennis, and Track & Field participants must wear face masks at all times except when involved in active outdoor participation (in the game, during the round, during the match, during the race/event). Coaches and all other team personnel must wear face masks at all times, including participants when on the bench, in the dugout, between individuals events, etc.

  • Indoors - If a practice or competition moves indoors, all individuals (participants, coaches, team personnel) must wear face masks.

Additionally, I'm planning to offer a zoom call on Monday, April 5th at 7:00 PM to answer any questions parents may have regarding the new testing protocols.

Spring practices will begin March 22nd

Updated on 06/10/2022

Dear MHSAA Community,

Earlier today, the MHSAA Representative Council met to finalize the first dates of practice and competition for spring sports.  All remaining dates for winter and spring sports are now set and our clear goal is both seasons will proceed as scheduled through June 19.

The Council has set the first allowable date for spring sports practice on Monday, March 22 with the first allowed date of competition for all spring sports four calendar days later on Friday, March 26.   This decision was based on feedback received from the survey of athletic directors in which 74% favored a delay of practice for at least one week, along with input from spring coaches associations and member school communication.  All spring tournament dates will remain as originally scheduled with the last set of Finals taking place on June 19 for baseball, softball and girls soccer.

Note that the Council eliminated the preseason downtime restrictions for spring sports in 2021.  Out-of-season activities currently permitted for spring sports including general conditioning with unlimited numbers of students, 4-player workouts with rotations and open gyms/facilities may continue uninterrupted through March 21.  Remember that face masks must be worn at all times in all sports except wrestling and swimming & diving under current MDHHS orders.

It is our hope that this will be the final instance where dates have been moved and rescheduled during the 2020-21 school year.  Please continue to do all the things necessary in keeping everyone involved in school sports safe and healthy by following all published MHSAA safety protocols and MDHHS epidemic order requirements.

Thank you.
